How to vacuum (technique)

What to have ready
- Vacuum
- Crevice attachment
- Dust brush attachment
- Correct floor tool
Steps
- 1
Move obstructions out first — chairs, small tables, floor accessories go outside the room so you are not steering around them.

- 2
Plug in as close to your exit point as possible and keep the cord, hose and canister behind you at all times.

- 3
Vacuum furniture, skirting and corners with the attachments first. Floors are always last.

- 4
Wall-to-wall carpet: run the crevice tool around the room's perimeter first.

- 5
Hard floor with area rugs: vacuum the rugs, then the perimeter of each rug with the dust brush, then switch to the floor tool.

- 6
Fit the right floor tool, start in the corner furthest from the exit, right up against the skirting, and work the whole floor in a W-pattern.

- 7
Finish at the door, then put the furniture back.

Homes with pets: vacuum before dusting AND after — loose hair floats and lands back on surfaces you already cleaned.
